Homeless Outreach - Serving Vegan Food

  • Margaret T. Hance Park 67 West Culver Street Phoenix, AZ, 85003 United States (map)

Hosted by Benjamin Benulis, Jessica Smothermon and Jessica Burke

We'll be meeting at Hance Park in downtown Phoenix to enjoy a vegan picnic and distribute hygiene essentials to houseless friends.

How you can help:
-Show up! We need hands to help distribute food and hygiene products
-Bring vegan food and/or new or gently worn clothing items, shoes etc. more details of what's needed below
-Security. It would be good to have 1 or 2 people in charge of security just in case de-escalation needs to happen (it rarely does).
-Healers: if you are healing arts practitioner: massage, reiki, etc. please bring your table and any other essentials needed.

What You Can Bring:
-Freshly prepared vegan food OR packaged vegan food. Fresh fruits especially soft fruits like bananas, watermelon.
-ICE is a huge commodity for homeless in the summer and still needed.
-Bottled Water, preferably cold or even frozen waters. (Yes I know, plastic is bad, but it's the only reasonable way to distribute it to the homeless)
-New or gently worn clothes and shoes.
-Soap, toothbrushes, toothpaste, underwear, feminine hygiene products.
-Basic first aid supplies like antibacterial ointments for cuts, band-Aids, and Advil/ibuprofen.

Warning: If you have not done homeless outreach before please understand that many of these people suffer from severe mental health problems. They can be disrespectful, belligerent, ungrateful, loud, obnoxious, curse at you, etc. This is disturbing to many people, if this makes you uncomfortable it may be best to drop off donations and not stick around for distribution. Hopefully we don’t have to deal with the police but if they do come to check on us please refer them to Jessica Burke.
